Why is White Tea Extract Beneficial for Your Skin?

Green and black tea are staples in pantries across the world. Yet, white tea is less often consumed. While all types of teas provide various health perks, scientists are discovering that white tea has incredible benefits for skin. At the Harley Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, we help provide innovative, non-surgical skin care treatments and therapies for our clients. Our experts are always striving to offer new techniques that can support youthful, vibrant skin for men and women of all ages. Are you wondering if you should invest in products with white tea extract? Here are just a few of the reasons why this natural ingredient should be a part of your skin care routine.

The Difference Between White, Green, Black and Oolong Teas

Many consumers assume that multiple varieties of tea come from separate plant species. The truth is that white, green, black and oolong teas are harvested from cultivars of the Tea shrub, whose scientific name is Camellia sinensis. The wide array of flavors associated with the teas that fill marketplace shelves are produced by different processing methods. The level of oxidation is what lends the range of tastes, and is completed by drying, rolling, steaming, heat treating or fermenting. Black tea is fully oxidized, often through fermentation. Oolong tea is half oxidized, and green tea is lightly oxidized. However, white tea is the least processed of them all. Therefore, white tea has the lightest flavor, but is packed with nutrients that are otherwise lost during the extra phases of processing.

White Tea Contains High Levels of Antioxidants

Oxidative stress caused by free radicals can damage cells over time. As we age, we can begin to show visible signs of its consequences, primarily in the form of wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, discoloration and an overall dull complexion. Antioxidants work to fight these free radicals, which will reduce the symptoms of aging and a host of other problems like inflammation, low energy levels and chronic illnesses.

It Also Protects Collagen and Elastin

Matrix metalloproteinase, or MMP, is an enzyme that breaks down elastin and collagen in the human body. As we age, the amount of MMP’s increases substantially. Since elastin and collagen are the two proteins responsible for creating plump, youthful skin, an overabundance of MMPs can become a major issue. White tea contains a large amount of catechins, an antioxidant that specifically targets MMPs, and can serve as a defense mechanism for skin building proteins. Therefore, when you consume white tea and utilize skin serums and creams that contain white tea extract, you can help improve the condition and health of your skin.
