Tips for Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

The holidays can be a difficult time for staying slim. After all, the cocktail parties and family gatherings can make it challenging to maintain a healthy diet. At the Harley Institute in Atlanta, GA, we enjoy helping local men and women look and feel their best at every stage of life. We offer a variety of high quality, innovative skin care and wellness services that can help you do the same. Here are some tips for avoiding holiday weight gain, and what you can if you do if you need to restore your body back to its prior shape in the new year.

Eat Healthy Meals Before Attending Parties and Events

Attending holiday celebrations is an inevitable part of the holiday season. While complete avoidance is an option, doing so can take the fun out of the most magical time of the year. There’s no reason to skip the company holiday party or to stay away from a relatives Christmas Eve banquet. You can keep cravings at bay by eating a healthy meal before arriving to the event. Fill up on wholesome, nutrient dense foods at home, and then you’ll be less likely to indulge in Grandma’s pecan pie.

Schedule Time for Exercise

Time tends to go by more rapidly in the rush of the holidays. Our schedules seem to fill quickly with holiday feasts, weekend shopping and traveling. Try to stick to your normal exercise schedule. Don’t let being out of town stop you from lifting weights or maintaining your cardio sessions. Most hotels have a small fitness room on site and a lot of gym’s have locations throughout the US so you can utilize your membership card at the nearest location.

Reduce Stress

The holidays can also be extremely stressful. Unfortunately, stress can cause individuals to eat more often and may also create an excess of cortisol, a hormone that slows the metabolism and increases fat retention. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and stay as relaxed as possible to avoid weight gain.

Allow Yourself Occasional Treats

Saying no to every bite of chocolate or candy cane can cause a sense of deprivation. Use your own discretion and allow yourself an occasional treat when you’re enjoying time spent with loved ones. The key is to limit sweets, saturated fats and alcohol, and to balance out the occasional indulgence with an overall healthy diet.
