At first I thought my irritability, sleepless nights, and occasional panic attacks were just part of having a baby later in life along with the stressor of my full-time job. I didn’t understand what was happening to me as I was feeling exhausted and cranky instead of upbeat and energetic. I had never experienced major PMS symptoms and this did not feel related. It just didn’t make sense that I was only 45 and having anxiety, night sweats, and crazy mood swings. I wondered what was “really” going on with my body.
About that time, I had the good fortune to attend a women’s conference where Dr. John Lee, on the pioneers in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, was lecturing. I remembered listening t him share some the symptoms of perimenopause and felt certain he was talking directly to me. I stared using natural progesterone cream as he recommended and it relieved some of my symptoms, but not to the degree I had hoped. Like most women, I struggled along, wondering if I was truly just depressed and if I would ever feel like my old self again.
In the fall of 2007, while lamenting over the phone with my dearest friend about how “terrible” I was feeling, I learned she was under the care of Dr. Tutera, who is widely recognized as a pioneer and leader in the field of bio-equivalent hormone replacement therapy. My friend lives in Phoenix, AZ and Dr. Tutera’s main office is located in nearby Scottsdale. She was using the Pellet therapy he developed and was getting amazing results. I couldn’t wait to get off the phone and try to locate a Pellet Therapy certified physician in the Atlanta area. When I visited the Pellet therapy website I found a list of doctors in Atlanta who were using this therapy. Dr Sharon Harley was among them and I called to make an appointment.
After a conversation with Dr. Harley’s office manager, I scheduled an appointment to have my blood drawn to check my hormone levels. The results were telling; my testosterone level was virtually nonexistent and my estrogen was extremely high. The blood tests revealed all my hormones were out of balance. My regular physicals with my internist never uncovered this deficiency. I wondered, “why not?”
Dr. Harley performed a painless insertion of the pellet the next week. Her warm smile and attentive listening made me feel at ease during the process. Within 24 hours after the pellet was inserted, I felt as though I was waking up from a long nap. I felt rested and calm and the “brain fog” I was experiencing began to lift. I learned that the pellet is placed under the skin so the body can draw the hormones it needs in a way that mimics glandular secretion.
Within a few weeks my energy increased and I began to work out again. My friends and family noticed a difference right away! My whole outlook on life has changed. Plus, I’m pleased to report, those extra 20 pounds I put o during perimenopause are now gone! My husband is enjoying all the benefits of my balanced hormones as well!!
I truly can’t say enough wonderful things about the benefits of Pellet Therapy hormone replacement and the care I received from Dr. Harley and her staff!!

“Around our house, we call it the ‘rice.’ It’s something my husband says we can’t afford to go without. For me, this small particle, the Pellet Therapy, means everything. In my late 30’s, I started having PMS that lasted the “entire month.” I was healthy in every other way, but found I couldn’t sleep at night and started feeling as though I was freezing constantly. I lost weight when my mom died, but during this period gained 40 pounds. I was a wreck -- no libido, irritable, filled with anxiety, depressed, unable to sleep, and no energy.
In January, 2008, I had a “complete meltdown” over a trivial thing -- the loss of all the contacts on my new phone. For 45 minutes, I struggled to breathe and thought I was going crazy. I hated myself, because I felt I was becoming a monster. I sought medical help, but found no solution.
In the midst of this, my husband told me about a customer of his who was receiving bio-identical hormone therapy treatment from Dr. Sharon Bent-Harley. I immediately made an appointment, had blood work done, and learned I had almost no testosterone. Dr. Harley’s evaluation was that I was experiencing severe PMS not peri-menopause.
In May 2008, Dr. Harley inserted the pellet or “rice,” and within two weeks I felt better. My memory improved. I had more energy and could sleep soundly. By June, my libido came “roaring back!” I now had the energy to work out again and lost 30 pounds and dropped one and one-half dress sizes.
Now, let me explain my husband’s commitment to purchasing the “rice.” Once finances were a “bit tight”, so he asked if we could wait on the pellet. I agreed, but once the hormones were no longer being released into my body, all my symptoms returned. It was a nightmare! It was like “Jekyl and Hyde”. After a few chaotic days, my husband insisted I make an appointment, get the pellet inserted, and assured me providing me with “rice” would be a high priority the rest of our lives. My symptoms disappeared, and I was back to the “new” me!
How do I feel about Dr. Harley and her staff. I love them! They’re the best, and I have the utmost confidence in their care. I was “out-of-control,” and they gave me my “quality of life” back. I tell everybody about bio-identical hormone replacement!
